Between 1973 and 1976, the Société de Développement Edelweiss-Loisirs built a picnic area at the eastern end of the Plateau de Briey, on land made available by the burghers of Chalais.
The square is named Foncouverte, after the 1965 TV series of the same name. The series depicts a village that has been abandoned because its springs have dried up, and which the authorities give to a group of people in difficulty with the mission of bringing it back to life. As it took a major collective effort to bring drinking water to the picnic area, the reference was a natural one!
- The picnic area is made up of two covered areas seating 100 and 35 people and 4 tables seating 10 to 16 people.
- Each cover/table has a fire pit for grilling food. However, users must bring their own wood/coal.
- Two drinking water tanks are located near each cover. Toilets with drinking water are located in the middle of the square.
- Two petanque courts are available.
- The square has no electricity.
